Dr Tiago Pimentel
Event speaker
Tiago Pimentel is a specialist endodontist working in clinical practice in Colchester and a lecturer at UCL Eastman Dental Institute. He completed his undergraduate training at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and went on to an MSc and an MClinDent in Endodontology at King's College London. His research interests include clinical decision-making, the use of AI, vital pulp treatment, resorption, and clinical outcomes. He has co-authored articles in the IEJ and JOE and chapters in several books, and contributes regularly to postgraduate teaching and CPD at universities in Portugal. He is a member of the BES, ESE, and SPE (Sociedade Portuguesa de Endodontologia).
Nothing is impossible — are we there yet?
Modern endodontics has largely solved its technical problems. What remains is cognitive: the heuristics and biases that shape clinical decisions across settings. The session looks at the cases and published evidence that contradicts the intuitions clinicians bring to their clinical practice.
Aims & Objectives

· Understand the cognitive biases that influence endodontic decision-making, including base-rate neglect, representativeness, survivorship bias, and outcome bias
· Be able to distinguish radiographic success from tooth survival as outcome metrics, and apply each appropriately
· Recognise the diagnostic frontiers where uncertainty is genuine rather than bias-driven (pulpal diagnosis, cemental tears, restorability assessment)

· Apply calibration strategies appropriate to their own clinical setting, whether academic, hospital, specialist, or general practice
