Your dentist may advise you to have a more extensive definitive restoration of the tooth such as a cast crown that protects it from future fracture. The tooth is prepared and a laboratory made crown cemented onto it. This is common on the more posterior chewing teeth. A crown is only one type of cast restoration, others exist and can be made of a variety of materials.
