Maxillary Sinusitis of Endodontic Origin (MSEO)

Holly C. Boyer, M.D. – Physician, University of Minnesota

Roderick W. Tataryn, D.D.S., M.S. – Endodontist, Spokane, Washington

Session Description

The pathological extension of endodontic disease into the maxillary sinus and its sequelae are often unrecognized in both medical and dental practice, and frequently misdiagnosed and treated as chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).  This lecture explains the anatomy and function of the paranasal sinuses, and the pathophysiology and treatment of CRS, with a focus on the similarities and distinguishing differences to maxillary sinusitis of endodontic origin (MSEO).  The progressive stages of endodontic infection into the sinuses are explained using many case examples.  The goal is to help practitioners distinguish rhinosinusitis from odontogenic sinusitis, and specifically MSEO, to improve the health of patients through accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and improved communication between endodontists and ENT specialists.

Learning Objectives

Describe the anatomy and function of the paranasal sinuses and the pathophysiology and management of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS).

Describe the clinical and radiographic findings of maxillary sinusitis of endodontic origin (MSEO) and its differences to CRS.

Understand appropriate treatment protocols for management of MSEO including combined endodontic and surgical sinus treatment when indicated.
