The use of CBCT for lesion detection and outcome evaluation
Cone-beam CT (CBCT) has become widely used in Endodontics. The three-dimensional analysis of radiographic images allows for better treatment planning and the improved evaluation of endodontic outcomes. In particular, the healing of surgical endodontic cases has been scrutinized for doubtful healing in the past. This lecture will demonstrate how CBCT may change our view of surgical healing and discuss its impact on follow-up and potential re-intervention. However, with the use of three-dimensional images comes the medico-legal responsibility of identifying pathologies within the CBCT volume. One approach to minimizing risks may be using Artificial Intelligence (AI) – powered technologies that are rapidly revolutionizing health care. Recent advances in dentistry include the application of AI to CBCT imaging to improve detection and diagnosis. These include using AI to detect periapical lesions and tooth fractures or the automated recognition of teeth and other anatomical landmarks. This session will review automated radiographic image analysis for the detection of jaw lesions and give an outlook on predicted future AI-driven applications.
Biography
Frank C Setzer received the his dental and doctoral degree from the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany in 1995 and 1998; and his Endodontic specialty certificate, MS in Oral Biology and DMD from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, USA in 2006, 2008, and 2010, respectively. He is currently an Associate Professor of Endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, serving as Predoctoral Director in Endodontics. His research interests are the clinical detection, prognosis and assessment of periradicular pathology, in particular apical periodontitis, utilizing CBCT imaging and Artificial Intelligence, as well as endodontic microsurgery. Dr. Setzer is a dental faculty member of OKU, a member of the American Association of Endodontists AAE, and a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics ABE. In addition, he is Associate Editor for Journal of Endodontics and the European Endodontic Journal and serves on several others editorial review boards.
