Title: “Endodontic Irrigation: Science Or Marketing?”
Course Description:
The first documented use of sodium hypochlorite was described by Dr. Arthur Barton Crane of Washington DC in 1920. Interestingly this solution (NaOCl) remains the main irrigant for root canal procedures over 103 years later. So, what does the future of root canal irrigation hold for clinicians and researchers? For over 30 years endodontics has seen a vast development in mechanized canal shaping and cleaning with over 350 different systems. However, there has been little scientific support and direction for advancing the concepts of irrigation that include tissue removal, biofilm elimination and canal disinfection, thereby matching the efficiencies of the mechanized procedures. This presentation will focus on an in-depth evaluation and assessment, historically and contemporarily on the evolution of irrigants and irrigation, highlighting their key aspects to achieve predictable clinical success.
Educational or Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this presentation the participants should be able to:
Cite and detail the chronology of root canal irrigation
Describe the various irrigation solutions used in root canal procedures
Cite and describe the essential functions of root canal irrigation
Detail the variables encountered clinically that may affect root canal irrigation
Describe and differentiate among the various types of root canal irrigation
Discern between marketing or science in the commercial offerings available for root canal irrigation
