Dr. Careddu graduated with Honors from the University of Cagliari (Italy), where he also completed a Master’s program in Clinical Endodontics. He later obtained a Diploma in Microendodontics from the University of Valencia (Spain). He subsequently moved to Dublin (Ireland), where he completed a six-year PhD program at Trinity College Dublin, with research focused on calcium silicate-based materials and vital pulp therapy. Now he balances clinical practice as an Endodontist in private practice and academic and research activity as a Senior Lecturer at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

Dr. Careddu is the author of numerous scientific publications, lectures at international Master’s programs and is a regular speaker at international conferences.

He currently serves as President of the Irish Endodontic Society (IES) and represents Ireland in the European Society of Endodontology (ESE).

Handling the pulp – a surgical approach to managing a soft tissue

This session provides a practical, clinically oriented exploration of vital pulp therapy, focusing primarily on pulpotomy procedures. Participants will gain a clear understanding of how to approach the pulp as a living soft tissue during treatment, emphasizing the technical and decision-making aspects that determine success. Through a step-by-step discussion of partial and full pulpotomy, the session will cover how to evaluate the extent of pulp exposure, decide how much tissue to remove, and execute precise cutting techniques to achieve effective haemostasis.

The presentation will highlight the importance of technique in controlling bleeding and maintaining pulp vitality, followed by guidance on selecting and placing modern hydraulic cements to ensure a reliable biological seal before the final restoration. Practical tips, visual demonstrations, and clinical reasoning will be shared to bridge the gap between theory and everyday practice.

This session moves beyond the biological rationale to focus on what truly matters at the chairside: how to manage the pulp effectively.

Aims

·  Provide a practical, evidence-based overview of vital pulp therapy, focusing on pulpotomy as a predictable and minimally invasive treatment option for maintaining pulp vitality.

·  Demonstrate the clinical decision-making process involved in determining how much pulp tissue to remove and how to manage the pulp effectively during treatment.

·  Emphasise practical techniques for achieving haemostasis, managing the pulp as a soft tissue, and placing hydraulic cements correctly for optimal healing.

·  Enhance clinicians’ confidence and precision in performing vital pulp procedures through real-world, technique-focused insights that can be immediately applied in practice.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

·       Understand the practical principles of vital pulp therapy, with emphasis on how biological knowledge translates into real clinical decision-making.

·       Recognise how to clinically assess the pulp status and determine the appropriate depth and extent of tissue removal during partial pulpotomy.

·       Apply effective, evidence-based techniques to manage the pulp intraoperatively, including how to cut, control bleeding, and achieve predictable haemostasis.

·       Select and handle hydraulic cements appropriately, ensuring proper placement and sealing over the pulp tissue to support healing and long-term restoration success.

This session prioritises  practical guidance, enabling clinicians to confidently perform pulpotomy procedures and refine their surgical management of the pulp in everyday clinical situations.
